Yann Martel's "Life of Pi," if you haven't yet. Past that, I'd say "Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole or Nabokov's "Lolita." I also really, really loved "The Nine" by Jeffrey Toobin, but that's kinda an admission of nerdiness on my end because it is about the Supreme Court.
Helpful? Maybe? Who knows.

Fun, light read:
The Twilight series by Stephanie Meyers. It's about a girl who meets a handsome, mysterious guy- who turns out to be a vampire!

Interesting, historical fiction:
The Other Boleyn Girl- it's set in King Henry's court & deals with sister rivalries. It's part of a quartet, the movie comes out in early February with Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johanssen & Eric Bana.

Fantasy:
Eragon (the Inheritance trilogy)- a young boy finds a dragon egg & many adventures (and romances) ensue.

Classic:
Mansfield Park by Jane Austen- extremely sweet romance.

Sad, yet captivating:
The Kite Runner

Intense romance:
Like Water for Chocolate (I really think you'd like this one)!

I'm pretty eclectic when it comes to reading but I do tend to lean towards the romances...I hope you find one of these enjoyable because I've always wanted to start a book club. :)
