Wednesday provided a stellar excuse to spoil my special someone. Birthdays are so much fun (even when they aren't your own!)

We tapped our feet to the live, jazzy tunes while we made our way through our meal at Sambuca.

As we toasted the night with our amaretto, I noticed this simple little saying at the bottom of our receipt.

We woke up to a shining downtown view through the window at the Alden.

A perfect gift for the mathematician in your life, a working abacus. It was so much fun arranging the beads in the perfect color line-up.

We hit the ground running early Saturday morning. Literally. The 4.2 mile training run was seemingly easy upon first glance, until our friend, Hugh Miditiy, decided to grace us with his sloppy, sticky presence. Summer is officially here.

After showers & snacks, we were off to reward our run with a run to our favorite stores. And jackpot!

J.Crew Finds Galore! I even found a new pair of mint flats.

Kate never disappoints. Her whimsical animals, prints & baubles are irresistible.

A few treats that have been on my wish list from Anthro are now nestled cozily in my closet.

The lovely BHLDN is coming to Highland Village. Again, so glad that I am not yet married. This is a future bride's dream!

We stopped to refuel mid-day at the new restaurant in Highland Village, Up. I give it two thumbs-up!

We moved on to the evening portion of our day, aka: The Party Portion.

As usual the days fly by quicker than I can keep up. Luckily I have my phone ever at the ready to capture the moments that I hope to share. With the avalanche of photo apps available, it's hard not to choose a new one to try out each day. Hence, the filtered photos.

The ladies & I get together for a catch-up session, and on this month's agenda: Manicures at ZaSpa. This chic spot makes it easy to enjoy a pampered day with your girlfriends. I chose 'Cajun Shrimp' for my summer shade while Lei classed it up in a ballet nude & Allison embraced her inner sparkle with a dazzling pink. An appointment at the spa grants you a pass to the hotel's many amenities. You can lounge poolside, grab gourmet coffee, or pop in for a popover at the restaurant. We enjoyed a delicious meal at the charming Monarch Bistro's porch following our manicures. The conversation was flowing as freely as the Bloody Marys/Iced Lattes.

Saturday brought a big birthday for a little boy! John-Paul turned 1. While he embraced his party hat & enjoyed opening his many gifts (including mini Toms--adorable!), blowing out his candle was a bit too much to bear. Here's to many more, little man. It only gets better from here.

Sunday lead us to Allen Parkway for the Art Car Parade. The weather was beautiful, and so was the people-watching. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Houston, it's worth it! I am looking forward to the upcoming outdoor festivals that the Houston Summer has to offer: SummerFest, Beer Fest, & many more are right around the corner. Humidity? Who cares when you're surrounded by your peeps.

The ever-romantic gentleman suitor surprised me with these gems this evening. Somewhere in between homemade salad dressing (lemon-garlic-pepper; we winged it) and pita pizzas this little box found its way into my hands (it was nestled at the bottom of the grocery bag).

I saw this collection on the website recently & fell in love completely. I debated buying them for myself, but could not think of a legitimate reason for such a lovely reward. I just love the uniqueness of each stone, and the hand-placement of the rough-cut gems in their cradles, not to mention his explanation of the type/style/characteristics of the stone, being a geophysicist & all.

I have truly found a treasure...

We celebrated Reid's birthday at Miller Outdoor Theater enjoying wine, cake & an entertaining performance by the Houston Ballet.

The family spent Mother's Day having a picnic at The Menil. With beautiful weather, happy family & nonstop laughter, we couldn't ask for a better way to celebrate our very special mother! She is the best! We topped the day off with a trip to Yogurtland.

Speechless in Seattle!

I spent a special weekend in Seattle. I was struck by the stunning scenery. Everywhere I turned there were clever conifers casting interesting silhouettes against the mountainous sky line. The blooming blossoms in every color were lovely to see. We were granted deceptively beautiful weather for our visit, and being within walking distance of the market, delicious coffee, food & uniquely wonderful shopping were amongst the contributors of a truly memorable date (not to mention my dreamy companion).

After flying in, and being greeted by Mt. Rainier, we had a local brew at an Irish Pub. We spent the next day taking a ferry across Puget Sound, and circumnavigating the Olympic Peninsula which includes all types of natural beauty, even a rain forest! We had tangerine martinis & dinner at Long, and strolled the streets to take in the fresh air. Sunday morning sent us on a hunt for the local sites. The original Starbucks, the Freemont Troll, the Space Needle, quaint neighborhoods & Bloody Mary's made a nice close to a perfect weekend. We were greeted with champagne upon check-in, and our hotel room came with a french press. Honestly, could a girl ask for more??

I've never been one for watches. I have many a friend who admire their intricate engineering & outward beauty with 2, 4, 10+ varieties in their collections, but honestly I have never been taken by the time piece. I keep a simple watch that is ready for all occasions. However, on a recent search for a new purse (found! it's the perfect size, and oh-so-cute!) I found myself walking into any store that I could think of in pursuit of the perfect pouch. From across the room I was drawn to this beaut. It's big. It's bold. It's fantastic! Before I knew it I was having it sized & wearing it out. You know what they say about finding love where you least expect it...

With my new office location comes a wonderful workout facility just adjacent to the building. The close proximity makes it nearly impossible to skip a workout, and the sparkly new gym beckons my attendance. The building is quite clean with the newest equipment. Even the ladies' locker room is nice (yes, it's true!) I especially like that there is a 'women only' fitness room. It is so much less intimidating to pump iron without the eyes of wannabe male body-builders lurking around the corner! I cannot wait to try the variety of classes offered either!

The best part: the entire gym is equipped with Fitlinxx. Upon arrival you get a full-body assessment, then when you log time on a stationary bike or do a few reps of rows you simply enter your pin into the machine & it tracks EVERYTHING for you! You can set goals, see how effective your workout was, watch your calories burn away, and so much more. You can access the account from home as well. It is like a personal trainer...without the person (or the price tag). The program can suggest workouts for target areas & help you achieve various fitness goals. Oh, and it's FREE with your membership.

For the girl who tracks everything in her life...it's a dream!

It's no secret that I am a fan of V-Day. One of the sources of my love for this lovely day is the traditional card that I receive from my Dad each year. I've started riding the bus...

To my new office...

It's really enjoyable actually. The bus picks me up a block from my house in the morning, and drops me off on the opposite block in the afternoon. A short 15-minute ride to/from the office gives me time to relax, listen to music and catch-up on my reading. I particularly enjoy the walk as it's nice to be outside during this brief window of pleasant weather. And at only $2.50/day-it's a steal compared to parking downtown. It feels so urban (and German...oh, how I miss Berlin) to be car-free during the week.

I've spent the week packing up my office in preparation for my next role at work. It's a bittersweet feeling. I'll be moving into a new group downtown as a 'Senior Analyst' which sounds more important that it actually is (I hope), and with it comes an entirely new set of faces, buildings & challenges. It is certainly a welcome change of pace, but I cannot help but feel sentimental as I leave my beloved geoscience nest. I started my career with this group and over the course of the past three years I have really made a home at 3 Greenway Plaza. I will carry cherished memories of business trips abroad, learning to love science (geology specifically) & troglodytes, understanding what it means to enjoy real coffee in the afternoons with snobby coffee f(r)iends, thai wars, happy hours, kind gestures & genuine friendships. I will take so much more than I bargained for from this assignment, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to grow with such a wonderful group of people & set of responsibilities.

I was treated to a going-away party/roast this afternoon. It was humbling to see so many faces come to wish me well, and humorous to listen to those recount our experiences through the years. And the parting gifts were quite thoughtful & creative. The room was filled with laughter, happiness & cupcakes!

With that, I bid you farewell dear URC. You will forever hold a special place in this honorary geologist's (yes, it's official!) heart.

Just Dance!

Wednesday nights I take a Hip-Hop class at a gritty dance studio near the MFAH. I tried the class as a means of rekindling my love of dance plus a nice 90-minutes of cardio, and was instantly addicted to the easy-going nature of the studio. I grew up in a strict, classic studio which I loved, however the casual vibe at the Met is appealing as a stark contrast (it reminds me of parts of Center Stage). My sassy teacher can dance circles around all of us (and most likely anyone in a club). He teaches in a hurried yet meticulous nature that I love. Even if I fall behind on the choreography I enjoy the chase of catching up. I look forward to it each week. It's the best way to spend 90 minutes of exercising!

When I arrive early I am able to watch the end of the tap class before me. Though I took tap for 15 years I am completely intimidated to add this class to my schedule. The crisp, clean sounds that come from the teacher's taps are perfect. I wonder if it's like riding a bike...would I remember the steps? Would my feet fall back in line? Who knows, but for now--I'll stick to Hip-Hop, where I feel I belong. Perhaps I'll work up the courage to tackle tap later in the year.

Houston gets a bad rap (wrap?), it's true. With it's sprawling land area, lack of public transportation & less-than-impressive weather I can see where the reputation declines. However, I have found a place for Houston in my heart, for if you keep your eyes open you will find there really is a lot to love about this muggy metropolis. A few treats...

The city is full of sculptures & urban art.

Each neighborhood has its own identity. Example: Upper Kirby (with its charming faux British phone booths).

There is never a shortage of witty business owners. The marquees are always entertaining.

During my tenure in this fair city I continue to find more delightful qualities. Carry-on, H-town.

What's not to love about this A Christmas Story reference? The 'noodles' sticker is obviously an addition, but a welcome one as it is from Jenni's Noodle House...mmm.

I have seen various pieces of this Banksy-esque graffiti artist around town for a couple of years now. Catching a glimpse of his whimsical work always brings a smile to my face. I will make it a point to snap a photo as I come across my next Coolidge to share!

It's great to have a Houston-based graffiti artist (that I enjoy). Looking for his work is like a little treasure hunt.

Smoked Jalapeno Black-Eyed Pea Soup*
1 c dried black-eyed peas, soaked
1 tbs olive oil
1 medium purple onion, diced
Salt
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 medium carrots, peeled & diced
2 ribs celery, diced
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried thyme
2 smoked jalapenos (ribs & seed removed, finely chopped)
1 c frozen sliced okra, thawed
4 c vegetable stock
1 tsp rice vinegar
1 tbs chopped fresh basil
Freshly ground pepper

Cook the black-eyed peas. Bring to a boil, lower the heat & simmer, uncovered, until tender, 45 mins-1 hr. Drain, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid. Set aside to cool.

Saute the onion and garlic with the olive oil.

Add carrots, celery, oregano, thyme & smoked chiles. Cook for 3 minutes more.
Add the black-eyed peas, the reserved cup of their cooking liquid, okra and the stock. Bring pot to boil, lower the heat, and simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes.

Take pot off the heat, and add the vinegar & basil. Salt & Pepper to taste.

Voila!
I served mine alongside freshly baked cornbread with salad. It's delicious (and quite easy to make).

I have been enjoying the smell of freshly baked bread in my home as of late. It's reason enough to keep the loaves coming. Recently, I noticed the curious little man on the side of the bread flour package. What a silly touch!

As the legend goes, "It was a dark & stormy night when a small plant decided to go big time..." Tiny Boxwood's is a charming little cafe situated between a residential neighborhood & a landscaping company. Backed against a busy thoroughfare, its charm lies in its calming simplicity.

Tiny Boxwood's is, in my opinion, the quintessential Sunday Brunch spot.

Hooray! It's here! The new year!

I have deemed it the 'Year of Correspondence'. It's time to reacquaint myself with the USPS. Thus, each week I will send a handwritten note to someone. This week: Holiday Thank You Cards:

I, of course, plan to keep up my resolution from 2007 of leaving the country at least once a year (Berlin Marathon + Oktoberfest in September).

Finally, I have written down my 1 & 5 -year financial goals. I have a plan to keep them, and I am looking forward to working towards them.

In other news, we had a wonderful brunch this morning after our 7 mile run (YES! halfway to the NYC half). It's so nice to be surrounded by healthy people. It makes me want to be healthier. Delicious!

I am also looking forward to trying out some new recipes in my new cookware! Christmas & Birthday were so wonderful to me! Le Creuset, you are beautiful.

After dancing in The Nutcracker for 15 years of my life, I had not been to see the ballet since my last show (when I was 17!) Nor had my mom or dad who both supported me through long nights, early mornings, countless pairs of pointe shoes & bobby pins. It was a holiday tradition for our family that ended when my dancing days ended (let's be frank, my dancing days are far from over....I should say when my classically-trained dancing days ended).

This year I decided to reinstate the tradition as a girls' day for my mom and I. We started with a shopping spree for Bob. She looked so wonderful & wintry in everything she tried on...so we had to buy it all! Then we went to the best hotel in Houston, The Magnolia. Between the complimentary happy hour, shuttle service to the theater, warm cookies to greet us upon our return, and a piping hot breakfast buffet...the comfy rooms & spectacular views were icing on our holiday cake! It was so much fun primping & gossiping in our beautiful room as we got ready. We felt like stars!

We treated ourselves to a glass of Bailey's on ice (that's nice!) as we waited for the performance to start. So many little ballerinas with their dads. Eyeing the pretty pink ornaments, and prancing in their tutu-esque dresses. Their tightly spun buns were perfectly in place for the big night! It reminded me of when I was that age. The 'big-girl dancers' were my movie stars. They were the epitome of grace & beauty.

The curtain call came, and we took our seats. The performance was absolutely breathtaking! Instantly I was reminded of why I loved the ballet so much. The music (a live orchestra!), the choreography, the costumes...it was all so mesmerizing.

It was a wonderful way to spend our Friday night (and Saturday morning--facials at Origins!!)

In an effort to get into the holiday mood we decided to engage in an age-old, time-honored tradition: competition style. And yes, it got heated!

Fueled by spiced coffee, St. Arnold's & adrenaline we entered into a grueling test of creativity, construction and ingenuity. As we patiently awaited the judges decision (who took a surprisingly critical eye to both projects, and their jobs quite seriously!), we went through all of the things that we could have done differently. Less icing on the rooftop panels, more shaved kisses (aka: snow) around the perimeter of the house, a sail on the boat, more snow-pirates! It was a hard battle, but the best team prevailed. Though the winning team took home pride, glory & a reindeer/snowflake crown...I have a sneaking suspicion that the challenging team will call for a rematch next year. I'll have to hone my gingerbread cottage creating skills all year in preparation for the next round.

Yesterday I traded my dash at dawn for a twilight trot, and ran across the most magical troop of twinkling lights. I have never seen anything quite like it! This tree was breathing light. Normally I would think it overkill, but this was absolutely amazing.

It looked as if another tree was mid-assembly as the lights were falling, falling, falling from the branches. I've always imagined what it would be like to fall into a glass of champagne amidst the bubbles & glamour.

...now, I know.

my grandmother's house is packed with treasures from all over the world. her collection spans decades with treasures from her & my grandfather's life and travels. without fail i find something new with each visit. it's amazing that after years & years of visiting, the seemingly never-ending supply of wonders is....well, endless.

wonderful images of faraway lands with this stereoscope. (it's quite apparent where my love of travel stems from).

after a scotch-tasting a spec's where we sampled 9 different varieties (one was older than me!) i have a new appreciation for the spirit.

i did not have a taste for the drink prior to the tasting.
